Anne Schroer, P.E. Professional engineer, George Butler Associates Inc. Member since: 2006 What you do: I'm a roadway engineer.... Since joining GBA, I've been involved with many aspects of the design and plan preparation process for various roadway projects. My design experience includes local collector streets, urban arterial streets, and a variety of interchange types. I enjoy the variety of design experience I get with roadway engineering. On top of laying out alignments and profiles I also get to work on drainage design, erosion control, traffic control, wall layouts, and so on. Some of the more challenging projects have added strict time and budget constraints, right of way restrictions, and geological limitations. What do you value in the people you work with? Honesty, integrity, and reliability. Biggest professional role model? I have a few professional role models but the biggest are probably my parents. They taught me a good work ethic at an early age and it's stuck with me. What do you think companies need to do to attract younger generations into the engineering industry? Companies need to continue to support programs like MATHCOUNTS, model bridge building, Future City, and the like. They also need to be available at these events to talk to kids about what engineers do and the different job opportunities for engineers. They need to give kids a more realistic picture of what engineering is. If you weren't an engineer, you'd be: A financial planner...or more likely still an engineer. There's just something really satisfying about solving problems. Proudest engineering accomplishment: Receiving the Young Engineer of the Year award from the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers (KSPE). Your hobbies? Running and flag football are my most time-consuming hobbies. I'm currently training for my third consecutive Boston Marathon and planning has begun for Kansas City's 4th Annual Blondes vs. Brunettes Flag Football game to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's disease. In the past three years, the event has raised over $75,000 for the Alzheimer's Association, Heart of America Chapter. Finish this sentence: In 10 years, I will have... run a whole bunch of miles, laughed a lot, and hopefully stayed healthy! You joined NSPE to... become more involved in the engineering profession, to meet other engineers who are passionate about engineering, and to promote careers in engineering. Your desert island book: I don't sit down a lot outside of work so unfortunately I don't read much, but when I do it's typically some inspirational true story of accomplishment, Runner's World magazine, or one of Chelsea Handler's books. |
